Editorial Reviews
If you were to ask Juliet Lloyd about her favorite part of performing live, she would smile and say that it's the "element of surprise." In fact, the Boston-based singer/songwriter loves nothing more than leaving first-time listeners stunned with the powerful, soulful vocals that come from a seemingly mild-mannered young woman. And it's happening quite a lot these days, as she tours to promote the release of her debut album, All Dressed Up, featuring her unique blend of pop, jazz, and soul and her talent on multiple instruments.
Since a young age, music has always come more naturally than anything else to Juliet. Trained, both classically and in jazz, on piano and trumpet, she was a member of countless orchestras, bands, choruses, jazz ensembles, and musicals throughout her childhood in upstate NY all of which provided the foundation for a musician who is just as comfortable playing Rachmaninoff or Haydn as she is Ellington or Basie.
Juliet proved to once again be a quick study when she recently turned her attention to songwriting. The first song she ever wrote, a jazzy, piano-driven waltz called "Before Me," garnered an honorable mention from the 2004 Billboard World Song Contest. Another early tune, "Lullaby," a heart-tugging ballad, won Berklee College of Musics annual Songwriting Competition in 2005. Her style of writing has continued to develop into one that gracefully and skillfully balances elements of jazz, pop, and classic soul and one that perfectly suits her flawless vocal delivery.
The list of people who have been left stunned by Juliets performances has been growing exponentially over the past few years. She toured throughout the east coast for two years with Nik Entertainment Co., a party band based in Rochester, NY, playing in venues from Atlanta to Montreal. In 2003 she graced the stage at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, where she earned an enthusiastic ovation from the notoriously tough Amateur Night audience. Then, in May of 2004, she left Rochester and moved to Boston to attend Berklee on a vocal scholarship. It wasnt long before Juliet began making her mark on the local music scene. Since the summer of 2004, she has had a weekly residency at Kennedys Midtown in downtown Boston, where every Sunday afternoon she can be found playing and singing. She has performed in some of Bostons best listening rooms, including the Lizard Lounge, the Paradise Lounge, and Scullers, as well as in clubs and other venues throughout New England.

All Dressed Up, Juliets eagerly anticipated debut album, is a testament to her skills as a musician, writer, and arranger. In addition to pulling triple duty on vocals, keyboards, and trumpet, she assembled a top-notch group of musicians to record with, including Jake Hertzog on guitar, Rob Massoud on bass, and Geoffrey Morgan and Nick Falk on drums. Each of their contributions shine throughout the album, from the funky opening of "Ever After," to the lush title track, to the closing notes of Juliets solo cover of Duran Durans "Ordinary World."
The release of All Dressed Up solidifies Juliets place in the recent resurgence of truly talented musicians who take a do-it-all approach to their careers a throwback to the era of icons like Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. There will soon come a day when people are no longer stunned by her live performances, as they will already know the extent of her talents!
