About the Artist
Born Eleanor Fagen Gough in Baltimore, Maryland on April 4, 1915. Billie grew up with the exciting "new" music of jazz. Her early and most influential musical heroes were blues singer Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. By the time she arrived, at 27, in America's music capital of New York, she had become Billie Holiday, an inspired and upcoming vocalist. It was Count Basie's great tenor saxophonist Lester Young who dubbed her "Lady Day" -- a name that would stick with her throughout her career.

Product Description
Billie Holiday at her best. A quintessential jazz singer, Holiday interprets these songs with a playful sense of swing, while infusing it with a touch of the blues. She generously shares the solo spotlight with Benny Carter and Ben Webster on alto and tenor saxophone, respectively. Jimmy Rowles is Lady Day's perfect foil on piano. Experience the artist who set the standard by which all other jazz singers are measured.
