Decades after big bands were declared dead, Woody Herman was still on the road fronting his Herd. The sessions on this disc feature two bands tackling remarkably different, yet cohesive material. In the late summer of 1958, Herman reunited former band members for remakes of classic Herd charts. Far from a trip down memory lane, the session was filled with fire and life and features two of the trombones most distinctive stylists, Bob Brookmeyer and Frank Rehak, trumpeter Ernie Royal, and saxophonist Al Cohn. Later that year, special guest guitarist Charlie Byrd sat in with the band for some Latin jazz numbers that bring out another side of Herman's artistry. The Tradition reissue of this album includes new comprehensive liner notes. The mastertapes were digitally remastered for this release.
